Siege of Acre




March 18, 1799 - May 20, 1799

General Bonaparte needed to take Acre from the Ottoman Turks to continue his march towards Jerusalem. Despite laying siege to the fortress, the French were short on siege artillery and were unable to prevent British ships from reinforcing the the Turkish defenders. Numerous attempts to take the city failed, and after two months the French had no choice but to fall abandon their offensive and fall back to Egypt.
