Battle of Canope

Also known as: Alexandria, Aboukir

March 21, 1801

After General Kléber's unfortunate assassination, the French were commanded by General Menou who was a more able administrator than strategist. Yet another army had landed to force the French out of Egypt, this time a British army led by Sir Ralph Abercrombie. The French moved out to attack and defeat this force, but then the attack stalled as officers were hit and movements were not coordinated. As the French lost all momentum, they withdrew and lost the battle. The British had won but not without loss as Sir Abercrombie was mortally wounded.
