Battle of Castiglione

Battle of Castiglione
Arc de Triomphe: CASTIGLIONE

August 5, 1796

As the Austrians marched to relieve the siege of Mantua, they split into different columns on their route. French General Bonaparte seized the opportunity to defeat each Austrian column in turn. After having defeated Quasdanovitch's column at Lonato , the French hurried to Castiglione to stop Wurmser's column. Though the battle did not go as planned, the Austrians were defeated and pushed back.
